There are many reasons to use automatic or manual balancing valves.

Some symptoms of badly balanced heating/cooling systems are:

• NoiseProblems

• InsucientCapacity

• Poor/inaccuratecontrol

• Longstart-uptimes

• Energywastage

Balancing valves can provide a solution to all of these problems providing an

economical and cost eﬀective solution to common hydronic problems.

There are two main types of system, each of them present diﬀering challenges

when it comes to balancing the system:

1. Constant Flow

Involves the use of a 3 port valve and a bypass, to maintain the ﬂow around a

system when there is no demand from the terminal units. In these systems, the

overall ﬂow remains constant.

2. Variable Flow

Involves the use of 2 port valves to shut oﬀ the ﬂow to the terminal units when

there is no demand. In these systems the overall ﬂow varies depending on

demand for heating or cooling.
